Britcon was appointed by British Steel to design and construct the 108 Rail Project at its Scunthorpe facility, one of the UK’s largest rail manufacturing sites. Building on a longstanding relationship spanning more than 25 years, Britcon delivered a specialist storage and handling facility capable of supporting the manufacture, storage and distribution of rail products across the UK. Delivered within a live COMAH regulated industrial environment, the project created the largest rail steel storage facility in the country, significantly enhancing British Steel’s operational capabilities and supply chain efficiency.

Delivering the project within a busy operational steel manufacturing environment presented a number of significant challenges. The works were undertaken on a live COMAH site where maintaining safety and minimising disruption to ongoing operations was critical. The project required the coordination of numerous specialist subcontractors, complex lifting operations and the integration of specialist rail handling systems. Additional challenges included the remediation of contaminated land, maintaining site access and egress for operational activities, and meeting demanding programme milestones and key performance indicators. Through early stakeholder engagement, detailed planning and robust risk management processes, Britcon successfully mitigated these challenges while maintaining operational continuity for British Steel.

The 108 Rail Project was successfully completed on programme between August 2023 and August 2024, achieving all key delivery milestones and performance targets. The new facility provides British Steel with a centralised storage hub capable of safely handling and storing large volumes of finished rail products, strengthening its ability to service projects throughout the UK. The project achieved 100% KPI delivery and received a customer satisfaction score of 9 out of 10, reflecting the collaborative approach adopted throughout delivery. By combining innovative digital technologies, robust quality management systems and effective stakeholder engagement, Britcon delivered a high quality facility that supports British Steel’s long term operational strategy while setting a benchmark for future industrial infrastructure projects.
