Britcon was appointed by Associated British Ports (ABP) to deliver a new salt bulk storage facility at the Port of King’s Lynn. Working in partnership with a long standing client, the design and build project involved the construction of a high quality industrial storage building and associated infrastructure to support the handling and storage of imported salt for the food and pet supplies sectors. Located within a live operational port environment, the project required careful planning and coordination to meet operational requirements while maintaining safe port operations throughout construction.

Scope of Works
The project comprised the design and construction of a 40,000 sq. ft. bulk storage facility together with extensive external works and supporting infrastructure. Britcon undertook land remediation and ground improvement works before delivering reinforced concrete bulk storage walls, a structural steel portal frame, roof and cladding systems, and high specification industrial flooring.
The works also included civils, drainage, utilities, hardstanding areas, mechanical and electrical installations, and coordination of specialist subcontractors. The completed facility was designed to provide durable, efficient storage and operational flexibility within the port environment.
Challenges
Delivering the project within a live port facility presented several logistical and operational challenges. Construction activities had to be carefully managed to ensure minimal disruption to ongoing port operations while maintaining strict compliance with ABP safety procedures and port regulations.
Ground conditions required remediation and improvement works before construction could commence, while the scale of the reinforced concrete storage walls and large span steel structure demanded meticulous planning and sequencing. Coordination between multiple stakeholders, specialist contractors, and the end user was essential to ensure the facility met both operational and performance requirements.
Outcomes
The successful completion of the facility has provided Associated British Ports with a modern, high capacity storage building capable of supporting the efficient importation and distribution of bulk salt products. The new facility enhances operational efficiency, provides secure and weather protected storage, and supports long term business growth at the Port of King’s Lynn.
Delivered safely and to programme, the project demonstrates Britcon’s expertise in providing complex industrial and logistics facilities within challenging operational environments. The completed development reinforces the company’s long standing relationship with ABP and its capability to deliver high quality design and build solutions across the ports and infrastructure sector.
