Britcon Steel delivered the installation of a new pedestrian footbridge over the Sunshine Coast Line at Weeley, Essex. Providing a safe and accessible crossing for residents and visitors while supporting a nearby mixed-use development of approximately 280 homes and commercial properties. The scheme was promoted following recommendations from Network Rail to eliminate the risks associated with increased pedestrian movements across an existing level crossing and to provide a permanent, future-proof solution for the growing community. 

The project comprised the construction and installation of a new pedestrian footbridge spanning the electrified railway line between Colchester and Clacton-on-Sea, together with associated access infrastructure and level crossing closure works.

Key elements of the scheme included:

  • Installation of a 25-metre bridge span across the operational railway.
  • Main bridge lift using a 300-tonne crane during a planned rail possession.
  • Construction of 14 metres of ramped access on the north side of the railway.
  • Construction of 18 metres of ramped access on the south side of the railway.
  • Closure and removal of the existing pedestrian level crossing.
  • Coordination with Network Rail and rail possession teams to safely complete works adjacent to live railway infrastructure.

Delivering the project within a live rail environment required meticulous planning, stakeholder coordination and strict adherence to railway safety requirements. The installation of the main bridge span during a limited possession window demanded detailed logistical planning to ensure safe lifting operations and successful completion within the available timeframe. In addition, all works had to be carefully coordinated with Network Rail, the developer and local stakeholders to minimise disruption while maintaining programme certainty. 

The completed footbridge has delivered a safe, inclusive and fully accessible route across the railway, removing the need for pedestrians to use the former level crossing. The scheme significantly reduces safety risks associated with pedestrian interaction with railway operations while supporting the successful delivery of the adjacent residential and commercial development.
The project was completed through close collaboration with Network Rail and project stakeholders, resulting in a permanent infrastructure asset that enhances community connectivity and supports future growth within the area.
