Britcon is delivering junction improvements at Abingdon Way, Witney Way and Didcot Way on behalf of South Tyneside Council, located within the Boldon Business Park area. The scheme forms part of a wider regional initiative to enhance transport infrastructure and improve bus journey times along the Sunderland to Newcastle corridor.
The existing junction currently operates as a staggered arrangement, which contributes to congestion and inefficiencies. The project is reconfiguring the layout into a more efficient crossroads arrangement, improving traffic flow while enhancing safety and accessibility for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.

Scope of Works
The works involve the comprehensive redevelopment of the existing signalised junction, including realignment to form a skewed crossroads configuration.
Key elements of the project include highway construction, earthworks, and full carriageway resurfacing, alongside drainage modifications to integrate with the existing network. The scheme also incorporates ductwork installation, road markings, and improvements to pedestrian and cycle infrastructure, including segregated crossings and upgraded footways.
Utility diversions form a critical part of the programme, requiring coordination with multiple service providers, including water, gas and power. Works include the diversion and replacement of existing mains, installation of new gullies, and integration of new services within the redesigned layout.
Additional works comprise site clearance, vegetation removal, installation of street lighting infrastructure and traffic signal ducting, as well as soft landscaping with tree and meadow planting to enhance the surrounding environment.
Challenges
Delivering the project within a live urban environment presents several logistical and operational challenges. Maintaining safe access for road users and surrounding businesses throughout the works requires carefully phased traffic management and ongoing coordination with stakeholders.
The presence of existing utilities across the junction adds complexity, with multiple diversions needing to be undertaken in sequence and, in some cases, during restricted working hours such as night shifts under traffic management conditions.
Environmental considerations also influence the programme, including the need to complete enabling works such as vegetation removal within seasonal constraints. In addition, the project requires close collaboration with utility providers and the client to ensure programme critical activities are delivered in line with the overall schedule.
Outcomes
Upon completion, the scheme will deliver a significantly improved junction layout, enhancing traffic efficiency and reducing congestion along a key transport corridor. The reconfiguration will improve journey times for buses and general traffic, contributing to a more reliable road network.
Enhanced pedestrian and cycle facilities, including segregated routes and upgraded crossings, will improve safety and accessibility, supporting active travel across the area.
The scheme will also provide long term infrastructure benefits through upgraded utilities, improved drainage and integrated landscaping, creating a more resilient and sustainable environment for the surrounding business park and its users.
