Britcon was appointed by South Tyneside Council to deliver the extension and expansion of Mortimer Community College in South Shields. Procured through the NEPO collaborative framework, the design and build project was developed to support the school’s growing pupil numbers by increasing capacity from 1,050 to 1,200 students. The scheme comprised a significant new teaching facility alongside enhancements to the existing college buildings, creating modern, high quality learning environments for pupils and staff.
Scope of Works
The project included the construction of a new three storey teaching block and a single storey dining extension. Extensive alterations and reconfiguration works were also undertaken within the existing school to provide four new general classrooms, two technology rooms, expanded art facilities, and two science laboratories. Additional circulation areas and new stair cores were incorporated to improve movement throughout the campus. Externally, the scheme involved rerouting services and an access road, creating 46 new parking spaces, and delivering external dining areas, canopies, fencing, gates, and soft landscaping works to enhance the overall environment.
Challenges
Delivering a major extension within a live educational environment presented several challenges throughout the 48 week programme. Maintaining the safety and wellbeing of pupils, staff, and visitors was a key priority, requiring careful planning and strict safeguarding measures. Construction activities had to be coordinated to minimise disruption to the day to day operation of the school, while meeting critical programme milestones associated with the academic calendar. The project also combined new build construction with complex refurbishment and reconfiguration works within occupied facilities, demanding close collaboration between all stakeholders.
Outcomes
The completed development has provided Mortimer Community College with a modern, future ready educational campus capable of supporting increased student enrolment and enhanced learning opportunities. New teaching spaces, specialist classrooms, science laboratories, and expanded dining facilities have significantly improved the quality and capacity of the school’s accommodation. The external works have enhanced accessibility, parking provision, and the overall appearance of the site, creating a welcoming environment for pupils, staff, and visitors. The successful delivery of the project demonstrates Britcon’s expertise in delivering complex education schemes safely and efficiently within live operational settings.
