Britcon was appointed by HoSt Bioenergy Systems as Principal Contractor for the design and construction of the Stanton Energy Anaerobic Digestion Plant in Ilkeston. Delivered through a fast track programme, the state of the art facility was developed to convert organic waste into renewable biomethane, supporting the UK’s transition to low carbon energy generation. Working in partnership with HoSt and Stanton Energy, Britcon took responsibility for the design and delivery of the entire development, creating a highly complex energy infrastructure project capable of producing over 3.5 million Nm³ of biomethane annually.

Scope of Works
As Principal Contractor, Britcon managed and coordinated all aspects of the design and construction process across the 28 week programme. The works included the construction of anaerobic digestion tanks and digestate treatment facilities, alongside extensive reinforced concrete structures, foundations and excavations.
The project also incorporated the construction of a warehouse, office accommodation and ancillary steel framed buildings. Significant mechanical and electrical infrastructure was installed, including specialist process tanks, pipelines, control systems and heat recovery technology. External works comprised drainage installations, sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), highways infrastructure, car parking, footpaths, cycle routes and extensive landscaping to create a fully operational renewable energy facility.
Challenges
The project required the successful delivery of a technically complex, multi disciplined development within an accelerated programme. Coordination between civil engineering, structural, mechanical, electrical and process installation teams was essential to maintain progress across multiple work fronts.
The installation of specialist anaerobic digestion infrastructure demanded careful planning and sequencing, particularly around large process tanks, impermeable membrane systems and buried services. Maintaining quality, safety and programme certainty while managing numerous specialist subcontractors and suppliers presented an additional challenge throughout the construction period.
Outcomes
Britcon successfully delivered the Stanton Energy Anaerobic Digestion Plant on programme, creating a modern renewable energy facility capable of producing sufficient biomethane to supply approximately 2,300 homes with green energy. The completed development contributes to the wider sustainability goals of the UK energy sector by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and supporting the circular economy through the conversion of organic waste into renewable energy.
The project demonstrated Britcon’s ability to successfully manage and deliver complex energy infrastructure schemes, integrating civil engineering, building construction and specialist process installations within a single coordinated programme. The successful delivery strengthened Britcon’s reputation within the renewable energy sector and showcased expertise in delivering high value, technically demanding facilities.
