Britcon was appointed as Principal Contractor to deliver a fast track design and build project for Wastewise Limited, creating a new recycling and waste management facility in Hull. The £3.2 million development was designed to support specialist waste processing operations, incorporating advanced treatment technologies alongside modern office and support facilities. Delivered within a 22 week programme, the project required close collaboration between the client, design teams and stakeholders to ensure the facility met operational requirements while maintaining programme efficiency.

Scope of Works
The project involved the construction of a highly specialised waste management facility, comprising reinforced concrete processing tunnels measuring 36 metres in length, 5 metres in width and 6 metres in height. Above these structures, Britcon delivered bio filter areas and plant rooms to support the facility’s operational processes. Additional works included the construction of a reception and administration building, warehouse accommodation and support facilities. The external envelope incorporated composite cladding and precast concrete wall panels, providing a robust and durable solution suitable for an industrial environment. Extensive infrastructure works formed a key element of the project, including the installation of new electrical mains services, rainwater goods and utility connections. Britcon also delivered drainage networks, sewage and surface water infrastructure, roadways, parking facilities, footpaths, cycle routes and landscaping works, creating a fully operational and accessible facility.
Challenges
The specialist nature of the facility required careful coordination between multiple disciplines, including structural, civil, mechanical and electrical works. Significant reinforced concrete structures, containment systems, pipelines and process related installations had to be integrated within a compressed construction programme. The project also demanded precise sequencing to facilitate the installation of specialist waste processing equipment and associated mechanical and electrical services. Working collaboratively with the client and supply chain partners was essential to ensure that operational requirements were fully incorporated into the construction process without impacting programme delivery. Sustainability considerations played an important role throughout the project. Early engagement with stakeholders enabled value engineering opportunities to be identified and implemented, helping to reduce material usage, minimise waste and lower the overall carbon impact of the development.
Outcomes
The completed facility provides Wastewise with a modern, efficient and purpose built recycling and waste management centre capable of supporting specialist waste processing operations. Delivered on programme, the project successfully combined industrial buildings, advanced process infrastructure and extensive external works within a single integrated development. Through collaborative working and effective project management, Britcon delivered a facility that enhances Wastewise’s operational capabilities while providing the infrastructure required for future growth. The project demonstrates Britcon’s expertise in delivering complex industrial developments involving significant civil engineering, structural concrete, mechanical and electrical services, all while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability and value engineering.
