Works Scope
The scope of works includes extensive earthworks and ground engineering, demolition works, c.2,500m3 of reinforced concrete foundations and bases, drainage/external works, structural steel gantry, stacking pens and associated walkways (c.800 tonnes of steel), full M&E installations and integrated control systems including all commissioning plus new railway track and new crossing controls.
Britcon was appointed Principal Contractor and commissioned to create a 25,000-tonne rail stocking facility in one double bay, spanning two rail tracks with an overhead gantry system in each bay with 11 Stahl hoists and 11 SGM magnets, carrying four rails per lifting operation all working simultaneously with fully automated safety systems.
Key Project Challenges
- Managing specialist equipment sourced internationally and procured both directly and indirectly by Britcon.
- Risk Management - part of the pre-construction process required Britcon to undertake pre-commencement surveys and investigation works.
- Working alongside British Steel to review provisional sums and client contingencies, by informing complete design allowing this issues to be removed and provide cost certainty.
How we successfully delivered the project:
Throughout the pre-construction phase, Britcon introduced systems for collaborative planning techniques to proactively manage this complex project.
We engaged with our internal and external teams in the detailed design phase, resulting in us providing an expert solution and working within an existing facility. We also carried out extensive design works on the steel gantries to manage the deflections involved on the working facility.
