Overview
The project at Roundhay School, Leeds comprised the construction of a new modular constructed Primary School on Wetherby Road situated within the Green Belt, and also falling within the Roundhay Conservation Area. Section 278 works were also required to form entrances and drainage connections off Wetherby Road and Elemete Lane.
After undertaking a major earthworks operation, Britcon carried out the foundations, drainage, utilities and external works which involved the construction of pad foundations for the buildings and link structures, reinforced concrete slabs and a lift pit. Close corporation and advanced planning was essential as the groundwork's and buildings were installed on a rolling programme. A number or timber and brick clad retaining walls and steps were constructed as a key feature of the site was the difference in levels across which slopes up steeply up from Wetherby Road.
As part of our sustainable drainage scheme a large stormcell attenuation system was installed to control surface water on the site. The stored water was released through vortex flow control unit and via an interceptor into the existing drainage system along Wetherby Road. In addition, tree protection fencing and non-mechanical excavation was required where the drainage connected into the existing system as there were protection orders on certain trees.
New utilities were installed from both Wetherby Road and Elemete Lane. A new substation was also constructed off Elemete Lane.
Due to the site being sited in a conservation area, an extensive landscaping regime formed part of our brief. High quality textured yorkstone flags were laid to form the school entrance and the car park was block paved. A series of roads, paths a games court enclosed by a paladin fence and play area were constructed in tarmac. Numerous items of street furniture were installed including a children's reception play area complete with sand pits and timber seating.
After placing topsoil our soft landscaping included, a mixture of tree, shrub, bulb planting wild flower seeding around the site boundary and in dedicated planting areas. The remaining soft areas were grass seeded to for an amenity area, sports pitch and play area.
